The plot has Erszebet Simor falling in love with Gabor Rajnay, who has a wife in Paris, but he has told everybody she is dead. Erszebet, via a little scheming and a direct appeal to the not-dead wife, gets Rajnay a divorce so she can marry him. The not-dead wife probably figured that as good riddance. Anika, the daughter of the Greek partisan refugee and the Hungarian medical student, Zoltán fall in passionate love. But Anika's mother wants her to marry a Greek, for she is very homesick and wants to go home. The under-age girl cannot protest.
This is one of Ulmer's best movies and, for my money, possibly the best opera film ever --
the Ukrainian Semyon Artemovky, and supported by Ukrainian communities in New Jersey (though you'd never guess it was filmed there). Includes a color sequence.
Gyula Kabos is the manager of a Hungarian theater, and is a staunch supporter of Antal Pager, who is struggling for a stage career with the help of his wife, Lrari Tolney. Kabos loses his savings backing Pager but, later, Pager manages to achieve fame and makes thing right for his friend
